I’m Hannah and I have a big cultural clash in my household. My mom is Peruvian and my dad is
Puerto Rican. For Christmas we have some different traditions. A Puerto Rican tradition is to have
“parrandas” which is blasting music through the streets, while Peruvians pray the Novena (for the 9
days before Christmas). My parents both have spanish accents, but they’re very different. Puerto
Ricans have a deep straight forward accent, and they don’t roll their “r”s. On the other hand Peruvians
have a light hearted tone, and tend to exaggerate their “r”s. It makes it difficult when I’m trying to
pronounce a word with an “r” in it. My parents have also come from different loves of food. My dad’s
country loves fried food (Puerto Rican), while my mom comes from the love of organic and natural food
(Peruvian). Another major difference between my parents is their origins. Peru is an independent
country, and we celebrate its independence on the 28th of July (by watching a 6 hour parade of
horses), while Puerto Rico is a U.S. Territory. Overall I come from pretty different cultures, but it makes
it a lot of fun!
